Massage therapy has a history that dates back thousands of years and is considered to be one of the oldest modalities. Massage Therapy manipulates the body’s tissues to bring well-being and ease the pain. Through the times, it was practiced all over the world, and nowadays, it is recognized as a therapeutic method to treat the body tissue to increase healing processes and maintain overall health.
In Ontario, Massage Therapy is a regulated profession and massage therapists work within their scope of practice: The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate, or augment physical function, or relieve pain.
Massage therapy manipulates the body’s muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, connective tissue, and fascia to bring relief to pain or discomfort, functional or structural limits, work-related tissue overuses, and different types of injuries. Massage Therapy reduces emotional or physical stress, decreases edema, eases headaches and migraines, and helps with many chronic conditions. Massage therapy increases blood circulation, oxygen exchange in the treated area, metabolic processes, and much more.
Everyone can benefit from a massage therapy session. Even if you are healthy and do not experience discomfort, having a massage treatment can support the energy flow, maintain positivity and create a feeling of wellbeing. Having massage regularly is beneficial and brings you to the highest level of health.
Massage therapy can be combined with Feet Reflexology treatment, Polarity Therapy treatment, Hot Stone Therapy, Cupping Therapy and many more modalities. Massage can be done on any particular area or the whole body.
During the session, the client is on the massage table or the massage chair (depending on the client’s issue). The client may be positioned on the back, side-lying, or the stomach, depending on the client’s level of comfortability. The client stays covered with the cover sheet/blanket at all times and the therapist uncovers only the areas to work on at the moment. The duration of the session varies from 30 minutes up to 2 hours and depends on the client’s goals, indications/contraindications, and treatment plan for the conditions.
Before the treatment, each client is required to fill out a health history form which lets the therapist know his/her health issues, medications, and goals for massage. Also, the therapist will conduct an interview and assessments based on the client’s condition, discuss the treatment plan with the client and possible risks, benefits, and side effects of the treatment.
After the session, clients are usually encouraged to do home care exercises as it’s really important to maintain a new level of wellbeing brought by massage to change the current health issue and guide the body to the new, healthier stage.
Massage Therapy is usually covered by private insurance companies. The massage therapist can provide a receipt of the treatment and the client can be reimbursed it through his/her insurance company.
