What is Hot Stone Massage?
Hot stone massage is an ancient therapy practised for over 5,000 years across various cultures, including Indian Ayurveda, Native American traditions, and Hawaiian healing methods. It’s known for its powerful ability to facilitate the body’s natural self-healing using heated basalt and marble stones. The soothing warmth of the stones helps to relax muscles, reduce tension, and promote overall well-being.
How it Works
During a session, heated stones (usually between 120-140°F) are placed on different areas of the body such as the back, legs, palms, and face. The therapist may also use cold stones for specific treatments, known as Cold Stone Therapy, which involves applying ice-cold stones to reduce inflammation and pain. The stones may be moved over the body with oil or lotion or placed in specific areas to allow the body to absorb the heat or cold. This treatment helps alleviate muscle tension, improve blood and lymph circulation, reduce stress, and can even assist with headaches, sciatica, and sleep problems.
Important Considerations
While hot stone massage is generally safe and deeply relaxing, it’s essential to consult your physician before receiving treatment if you are pregnant or have conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis, heart disease, or varicose veins. Certain medications, like anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxants, may also require approval from your doctor.
Additionally, hot stone massage should be avoided individuals with acute conditions like appendicitis, severe heart or kidney disease, contagious diseases, or recent surgeries. Local contraindications include flare-ups of arthritis, nerve inflammation, open wounds, or skin conditions worsened by heat. Always ensure you are treated by a certified massage therapist and communicate any discomfort during your session for the safest experience.
